World Wish Day – The Inspiring Story of Nicco, the 19 Year Old Who Battled Cancer

By Gillian Newman on April 28, 2021

Nicco is 19 years young and has dealt with a lot more than the average individual. Growing up, he was an avid motocross rider, biker, and enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, like most of us do. When you hit your teenage years, these moments become all the more important as you’re coming of age and creating your own sense of self and values. However, when Nico reached high school, he was dealt with a difficult hand of cards. He was diagnosed with Leukemia and he fought his battle all the way through graduation.

When Nicco was in treatment, he was approached by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a foundation focused on granting life-changing, larger-than-life wishes for eligible children who are dealing with serious illness. Make-A-Wish uses this motivation of helping kids to make their donated resources go far and exceed the expectations of every “wish kid”. Make-A-Wish reached out to Nicco and decided to grant his wish.

Make-A-Wish knows the transformational power of granting these wishes. According to a study, “patients who were granted a wish were more likely to have fewer unplanned hospital and emergency department visits.” The findings of these studies encourage more doctors and volunteers to take part in granting wishes for patients across the country.

Some teenagers would wish for a luxury vacation or to meet a celebrity, whereas Nicco decided he wanted to improve and revamp his ride - a white, extended cab GMC.

Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, his wish came to life. Small businesses and the community came together to make Nicco’s wish come true. RNJ Customers & Collision Repair as well as California Upholstery donated their time, treasure, and talent to give Nicco’s car a refresh – hooking it up with new paint, black leather interior, and some bells & whistles to go along with it.

His reaction was priceless and his gratitude was unmatched. You don’t usually see a 19 year old impacted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, but this wish was so heartwarming. No teenager should have to spend their pivotal years in a hospital. Thank goodness for Nicco, he is doing well and thriving with his new wheels.

Wishes are not just for the wish kid. They bring communities together and impact everyone involved: the wish kid themselves, the volunteers that bring people together, the donors that extend their dollars to the fullest, and the sponsors and medical professionals that want to see these kids smile.

Jukin Media’s People Are Awesome partnered with BLKBX Creative Group for World Wish Day—which takes place every year on April 29th and marks the anniversary of the wish that inspired the founding of the Make-A-Wish Foundation—and got behind the camera to tell this incredible story of hope and community.
